David Carter of Wandering Wheels Bicycle Club, August 1974

Year:
1974
Published In:
Ann Arbor News, August 24, 1974
Caption:
Growing Up In God To ride coast-to-coast, grow up in God and give God away. These are the goals of Wandering Wheels, an inter-denominational group of bicycle riders which recently completed its 13th cross-country bicycle trip. David Carter, 15, son of Mr. and Mrs. Giles Carter of 1303 Grant St., Ypsilanti, was one of the 75 members of the group, which ex-University of California All American football player Robert Davenport says was the largest contingent ever to cross the country by bicycle. Davenport, former football coach at Taylor University, founded Wandering Wheels in 1966. David said the group crossed the highest paved mountain pass in the United States, Trail Ridge Road of the Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. The bicyclists faced 115-degree temperatures in Oregon and completed the 3,375-mile trip in 33 days. They started in Oregon and finished in Delaware. The longest distance they travelled in a day was 140 miles. David attends St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Ypsilanti.
