AACHM Oral History: Patricia Horne McGee

Patricia Horne McGeePatricia Horne McGee was born in 1946 in Ypsilanti, where she attended Perry Elementary and Ypsilanti High School. She recalls the mutual support and accomplishments of many childhood friends and neighbors, and reflects on rising tensions between Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti. Horne McGee has two master's degrees from the University of Michigan and UCLA. She taught child development and social work for fifteen years at Ferris State College and Mercy College. After leaving academia, she worked for the Wayne County Intermediate School District and she was director of Head Start for Washtenaw County.

OLD-FASHIONED CHRISTMAS - Elizabeth Hall, a member of the Allen School Girl Scout Troop 579, decorates a tree at Cobblestone Farm with handmade ornaments. The Cobblestone Farm, at 2781 Packard Road in Buhr Park, will present its fourth annual country Christmas Saturday and Sunday, from noon to 4 p.m. The 1844 farm will be decorated in the early Victorian style, including live music, antique toys and toy trains. There is an admission fee.

Legacies Project Oral History: Alma Wheeler Smith

Alma Wheeler Smith was born in 1941. She recalls attending Civil Rights meetings in Ann Arbor with her parents. Her father Albert H. Wheeler was the first African American mayor of Ann Arbor (1975-78). Smith worked for nearly a decade as a TV producer before becoming a politician. Smith (D) served in the U.S. House of Representatives as part of the Michigan delegation from 2005-2010 representing the 54th District.  Prior to her tenure in the U.S. House, Smith served in the Michigan Senate representing the 18th District from 1995-2002.

Alma Wheeler Smith was interviewed by students from Skyline High School in Ann Arbor in 2018 as part of the Legacies Project.
