DUNES AND LAKE COMBINE FOR BEAUTY: Highway US-2 west from St. Ignace, relocated along the northern shore of Lake Michigan and paved several years ago, has become a scenic drive of rare charm. Pines, cedars, pin cherries, and other trees have gained a foothold among the drifted sands. Woods, waters, beaches, curving shores, headlands, boats in the distance, all contribute to the appeal of constantly changing pictures.

Sand Dunes of the Great Lakes - Cottages Along Grand Haven State Park, 1939
Year:
1939

Ann Arbor News, July 24, 1939

COTTAGES AMONG THE DUNES: This picture, taken from the Oval at Grand Haven State park, shows how cottagers build their homes among the sands. The lower cottages are on the level of the beach. Others rise along the slopes of the sand hills. Still others are on the highest points. They are reached by inclined board paths and flights of stairs. It is a real climb to the topmost dwellings. The dune shown here was an open blow. Most cottagers prefer to be among the anchored, wooded dunes.
