James Daniel (left), Ypsilanti High School senior, and Thomas Gieryn, Ann Arbor High School senior, display their trophies after winning the oratorical contest sponsored by Elks Pratt Lodge No. 322 and Daisy Chain Temple. Gieryn placed first and Daniel second in competition on "The Negro and The Constitution." Gieryn, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred V. Gieryn of 2541 Hawthorne, will go on to the state competition in June. Daniel is the son of the Rev. and Mrs. William J. Daniel of 213 Buffalo, Ypsilanti. Pratt Lodge and the Temple also honored Mrs. Charlesetta Monroe, a former director of the oratorical contest project, in the program which was held at Bethel AME Church Sunday.

MEET ANN ARBOR HIGH'S TRACK CHAMPS: For several years The News has honored the city's championship high school teams by printing pictures of the squad which took the title. Here, then, is the squad which holds this year's Five-A League and regional track championship. Some of its members today were competing at Ferry Field in the State Class A title meet. Those above who failed to qualify for today's competition were on hand to cheer. The squad members, left to right, in each instance: BOTTOM ROW - Assistant Coach Hank Fonde, Prenty Ware, Chuck Morton, Jack Newman, Don Franklin, Coleman Jewett, Co-Capts. Bob Barr and Bill Newman, Art Preston, Bob Winder, and Coach Tim Ryan. SECOND ROW - Joe Bone, Bruce Rockman, Harry Haas, Bill Koch, Dick Mayers, Don Koch, Bob Hensen, Dick Sleet, Harry Shore, and Hugh Correll. THIRD ROW - Manager Jerry Waxman, Art Clark, Jim Ritchie, Milt Theros, Marv Baker, Duane Calvert, Mike Berg, and Hathaway Gulley. Sheriff's Capt. Harold Owings (left) and Deputy Jerry Russo look at two glass cases containing a variety of weapons confiscated by officers in criminal cases over the past two years. The collection includes brass knuckles, sawed-off shotguns, pistols, switch-blade knives, a straight razor and a tear gas "pen." The weapons are on daily display in the office area of the County Jail and are used in training sessions given recruit officers.
