REPORTER OUTFITTED FOR RIDE: Although News Reporter Dick Kerr enjoyed a jet ride and inspection of the 472nd Air Force Reserve squadron at Willow Run recently, he's convinced now that AF planes and pilots' uniforms are designed with very short, thin men in mind. Here, a heavy double parachute needs adjusting by Lt. Louis G. Marlow before the air ride.

'JUST LIKE A FOOTBALL HELMET': A borrowed crash helmet and oxygen mask are adjusted for a snug fit before "going up." The helmet not only is a safety precaution, but it also shuts out considerable engine noise while flying in a jet. The oxygen mask was unnecessary during the 30-minute flight at some 21,000 feet altitude.

AIRMAN INSPECTS PLANE: Lt. Louis G. Marlow, one of the permanent Air Force detachment stationed at the new 472nd base, overlooks nothing as he checks this "T-bird" jet preparatory to taking off. The pilot lives with his family at 1292 Shirley St. in nearby Ypsilanti township. Reserve airmen - the "weekend warriors" of the skyways - fly this type of training plane and F-80 fighter-bombers at the Willow Run field.

PILOT 'CO-PILOT' CONVERSE: Standing beside the T-33 trainer jet in which he was taken for a ride, News Reporter Dick Kerr has a lot of questions to ask Lt. Louis G. Marlow about the operations of the Air Force Reserve squadron which began actual flying activity at Willow Run Airpot in February. When at full strength, the unit will have 400 reservists, about 25 jet aircraft and a permanent detachment of about 100 officers, enlisted men and civilian personnel.
