Just Ducky - Members of the Scarlett-Mitchell Woods Association were busy over the weekend erecting duck and goose nesting stations in a marsh behind Scarlett Intermediate School. They hope that next year some traveling feathered friends will take up residence in the marsh. The association is also trying to raise $6,000 to clear the marsh on the west end of the nature area, and to construct boardwalks over overlooks and access. Shown above are, from left, Manfred Schmidt, Fred Howard, Tony Bair and Sue McCrate.

Owl Aids Activities At Woods ~ Seemingly unaware of being watched, this pet owl brought many varieties of birds to the Mitchell-Scarlett Woods this morning. In the background (left to right) are Dan Bryan, Jim Patt, Jerome Fulton, John Bryan and Mrs. Robert Hendricks, who is owner of the owl and director of the guided tours through the woods. These nature walks were held this morning and will also be held from 2 - 4 p.m. Sunday as part of "Operation Mitchell-Scarlett Woods" which is a campaign to preserve the area purchased by the school board for use as a high school site.

Ted, Kevin Williams and Kevin Walker attend Scarlett, while the rest are Mitchell students. The petitions are asking that the wooded area south of the two schools be kept as a nature center. Some of the posters behind the students read, "Keep Scarlett Woods," "Save Wildlife." (Ann Arbor New picture by Photographer Cecil Lockard)
