CRACK THAT WHIP! Ann Arbor's outdoor skating season began yesterday as the Park Department opened the city's rinks earlier than usual, thanks to the current pre-Christmas cold snap. And skaters were quick to take advantage of their opportunity, as this picture, made at the Burns Park rink, proves. Nine boys have organized a game of "crack the whip."

HOCKEY, AND A TUMBLE: Where there is ice and youngsters to use it, a city rink quickly becomes a lively place. In this one small corner of the Burns Park rink the photographer caught the end of a "crack the whip" line, a boy practicing with a hockey stick and another in the middle of a nosedive as the slippery surface slides right out from under him.

THE PRETTIEST FANS: Michigan's hockey team has a big corps of solid fans but the prettiest ones are members of the Hockettes who perform for early comers before many home games. They are scheduled to make their final "hockey" appearance at 7:30 p.m. either Monday or Tuesday, prior to the Michigan-Denver contest here. Chicly uniformed and seriously happy in their performances, the Hockettes -- in their third year under guidance of Professor Richard J. Porter, of the U-M School of Public Health -- also make occasional pre-game appearances in East Lansing. Members of this year's group are Linda Lawrence, Michelle Murphy, Sue Brown, Aprill Krause, Carole Miller, Ann Wilson, Marilyn Gale, Sandra Kerr, Karen Young, Bonnie Wecker, Martha Woodruff, Carol Porter, Edithin Bateman, Penny Moore, Sally Dilno, Nancy Hanks, Liz Seligson, Marry Ann Colvin, Cheryl Miller, Robin Lawrence, Julia Daniel, Alice Leach, Sue Goldberg, Pat Poupare, Peggy Reed, and Marie Menefee.
