LAW OFFICERS PRACTICE 'JUDO': Representatives of local police and sheriff's agencies practice an ancient art given a new and practical twist by FBI officials who are conducting a school for Ann Arbor's law enforcement officers. At the top, a defensive pass in "Judo," a bone-cracking combination of traditional Oriental and modern wrestling and fighting holds, is demonstrated by Warrant Officer William Marz and Patrolman Harold Olson, of the Ann Arbor police department. In the lower picture Police Sgt. Joseph Huizenga (left) disarms a pistol-packing "attacker" - Deputy Vincent Fox, chief of the Washtenaw sheriff's identification bureau.

A performer with the Beijing Opera for 15 years, Hong-Jun Guan specialized in the martial arts, an integral part of Chinese opera. He attended the Beijing Performing Arts School from the ages of 10 to 18. Married to Michele Ehlers, he is now teaching martial arts and studying English here.
