SHANTY VILLAGE OUTPOST: These fishing shacks at the Boyne City end of Lake Charlevoix are the outposts for Smeltania, a community of hundreds of shanties about a mile out on the ice. Ice-fishing enthusiasts from all over Michigan and from other states come here to angle for the silver-sided smelt whose numbers make large catches possible. Visible in the picture is one end of the Christmas trees that form a line between the shore and Smeltania to guide fisherman when nights are dark or stormy.

Skillful riders can take the little skooters down winding courses and over jumps. The two pictured above are racing down one of the hills surrounding Petoskey's snow bowl, the in-city winter sports center.
