SAFETY PATROL BOYS START TRIP: Russell Calvert (left), 11-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Burgess (Edward) Calvert of 626 N. Fourth Ave., and Aksi Kikut, 13, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur A. Kikut of 2906 South Blvd., bid parents farewell as they leave to join 13 other Michigan Safety Patrol boys in the annual trip to Washington, D.C. sponsored by the Automobile Club. Both sixth graders, the boys are representing Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti. Young Kikut, formerly a patrol captain in Ypsilanti, recently moved to Ann Arbor. Calvert is a pupil at Jones School.

Children, Tutors Have Party: Four children who participated in this fall's Headstart Follow Through Program help one of the tutors, Roger Spencer (right), decorate the tree at their Christmas party at Jones School. Helping trim the tree with ornaments of their own making are, left to right, Damon Guster, Steven Tweedy and Phyllis Lightfoot. The children and Spencer, who is a University student and a member of the Psychology Department's outreach program, were among 150 youngsters and tutors at the party which featured gifts and refreshments donated by various Ann Arbor merchants.

ELECTION LULL: Poll workers at Jones School watched over the deserted voting booths at 8:30 a.m. today after about 21 residents of Precinct 1 cast their ballots in the Ann Arbor school election during the early hours of the morning. The voting started at 7 a.m. as fog and high humidity wrapped the city. The polls will close at 8 p.m.

FIRST HOME NURSING CLASS FINISHES: The first Red Cross home nursing class to be given under the Washtenaw county civil defense program was completed last night at Jones School. Two more are now in progress in Dexter, and others will be organized throughout the county as rapidly as possible, the Red Cross has announced. Mrs. Oliver Stirling, jr., taught the class. The class, shown (left to right), was composed of Mrs. Guy W. Talmage, Mrs. Reuben Hartman, Mrs. Betty Peer, Mrs. Harry Carver, Mrs. Donald Schmidt, Mrs. Olga Logan, Miss Corrintha C. Salsbury, Mrs. James Fitzpatrick, Mrs. Stirling, Mrs. Richard Hayden and Mrs. Ernest Katz. The figure in the bed is a dummy used for demonstrations in the nursing course.
