SHROUDING OF THE CROSS - In preparation for Ash Wednesday, Ernestine Jackson, left, and Christine E. Anderson use a black cloth to shroud the cross on the altar at Bethel A.M.E. Church at 900 John A. Woods Drive in Ann Arbor. Traditionally, the altar, cross, statues, and other symbols in Christian churches were draped at the beginning of the Lenten season, the period from Ash Wednesday to Easter. All adornments are covered to focus attention on the passion of Christ.
