One of the prime activities for the St. Thomas High football team is running through a series of skill drills during the first day of practice. Giving the football a kick is Vince Aquinto and awaiting their turn at the kicking tee (left to right) are Tom Schwind, Bruce Otwell, Jeff Swan, Jim Birmingham, Mark Bertz, Mike Pappas, Vince Peters, Dave Burke, Ken Morris and Bob Place. The Irish are drilling for the upcoming season which starts with a game at St. John's. The Irish drill at Riverside Park.

The keys to a St. Thomas winning season this fall rest on a powerful running game and rugged defense. Quarterback Mike Wagner (upper left) shifts to safety on defense and has intercepted three passes. Fullback Tom Schwind (upper right) provides the Irish with a potent ground attack, averaging 210 yards per game. Defensive back Lou Richard (lower left) and linebacker Jim Birmingham led the St. Thomas defense in the 6-6 tie with Wayne St. Mary last Sunday.
