This picture, showing the steamer Walk-in-the-Water, is from a sketch by the famous painter Whistler's father, George H. Whistler. Detroit is on the distant shore of the river. The picture is reproduced here through the courtesy of its owner, Lloyd A. Brown, curator of maps at the Clements library in Ann Arbor.

It was painted at Taxco, Mexico, and is one of a number of paintings by the Chapin family to be seen in the current exhibition of the Art Association.
