Construction on a 499-car, five-level carport on S. Forest near S. University has progressed to the skeleton stage. The carport, scheduled to be completed this spring, is being built by Ann Arbor Parking, Inc., a subsidiary of Towne Realty, Inc. When it is completed it will be turned over to the city for operation in a contractual arrangement with the parking firm. The realty firm owns the 18-story apartment building visible in the background.

Bundled up in plastic wrappings to provide workers with warmth and protection from the weather, the 26-story building being constructed at the corner of Maynard and E. William is slowly rising. When completed, it will dwarf the Maynard House (left) and will be the tallest building in Michigan outside Detroit. The News photographer, looking west on William, pictured the construction boom that almost spans the street near the Maynard intersection (foreground).
