Stairs leading up Mt. Baldhead, across Kalamazoo river from Saugatuck. Once children and grown-ups delighted in sliding down the sand slopes. But this threatened the destruction of Baldhead by sand slides, and so now persons go up and down this side - the inland side - by stairs. There are still open sand slopes on the lake Michigan side where the sands continue to drift and creep. A few years ago the hillside shown was mostly bare sand. Now it has been "anchored" by vegetation planted and nurtured for this purpose.
