MAKE BID IN TWO NATIONAL TOURNAMENTS: The J. J. O'Kane bowling team of Ann Arbor will compete in two national tournaments over the week-end. Tonight the O'Kane's roll in the National Elks competition at Des Moines with their efforts in the singles and doubles set for tomorrow. On Monday they will appear in the ABC tournament at St. Paul, rolling in the singles and doubles on Tuesday. The O'Kanes are Ann Arbor's leading bowlers. (This may be disputed). They are defending city champions, they won the title in the first half of the City league at the Michigan Recreation and are leading in the second half. They also are on top in the Classic league at the Ann Arbor Recreation. They won the city title last year with an actual pinfall of 2940 and at present are sixth in the team event of the state tournament and last year won fifth place in the Nation Elks tournament at Fort Wayne. The city champions above are apparently satisfied with their score in their final workout before leaving for the national competitions. Top row, left to right, Chris Anguras, Zonie Steinke and Pat Walsh. Botton row - Vic Shewman, George Kielwasser and Russ O'Brien. Walsh will roll with the team in the Elks National and will be replaced by Anguras in the ABC.

OVER-ANXIOUS? He didn't mean to but young Robby Taylor almost followed his ball down the alley, so intent was he on getting all pins to drop. 'Twas a foul, sure, but that didn't dim young Taylor's enthusiasm for the game.

Automatic Pin Spotters Behind The Scenes At An Ann Arbor Bowling Alley, April 1958 Photographer: Doug Fulton

Ann Arbor News, April 23, 1958

ALLEY AUTOMATION: Complex is the word for the equipment which has made pin boys pretty much obsolete in the world of bowling. The automatic pin spotters take up a lot of room, but bowlers and alley proprietors say they're more than worth the space and expense. It's a cluttery job getting in to repair them, however.

BEHIND THE SCENES: Bowling balls, of course, don't grow on trees or come all ready for use. Thumb and finger holes must be bored and proper spacing is important, especially to the serious keglers. Hank Platt operates the drilling machine at Huron Lanes, one of the few places in southeastern Michigan where such work can be done.
