ANN ARBOR BOWLERS CLEAN UP IN STATE TOURNAMENT: There is reason a'plenty for the big smiles worn by, left to right, Jean Raab, Helen Exinger, and Maurine Reynolds. Mrs. Raab will receive a check for $135 for winning the all-events division of the Women's State Bowling Tournament at Lansing with an 1,899 score. The other two will split $350 for having grabbed the top spot in doubles with a 1,243.

ROLLS A SEVEN: Mayor Bill Brown rolled a seven Saturday night, but he didn't pick up the lettuce. His Honor was officially opening the eighth annual men's city bowling tournament at the 20th Century Recreation. A capable kegler himself, the mayor appeared slightly nervous as he approached the foul line and sent the ball spinning down the alley to upset seven of the 10 pins. Twenty-four teams competed on the opening night of the competition.

BOWLING PROJECT LAUNCHED: Ann Arbor Mayor Pro-Tem Russell Burns (right) turns the first spade of dirt to mark the start of construction work on the half-million-dollar Colonial Lanes bowling center on Industrial Highway. LARGEST IN CITY: These 143-foot-long prefabricated wood beams in place at the new Colonial Lanes bowling alley of 1950 Industrial Hwy. are believed to be the largest clear spans to be erected in the city. Each beam weighs 4 1/2 tons and is made up of at least 58 pieces of wood laminated together. Two railroad flat cars were required to transport the beams from a factory in Peshtigo, Wis., with the rearmost car protecting the beams' overhang. Each beam is 28 feet high at the center. Colonial Lanes is being built by the Pinnacle Corp., which is headed by Donald Laubengayer of Ann Arbor, and is to be operated by that group when the bowling alley opens about Sept. 1. The alley will contain 28 lanes, a nursery room, a bar-lunch room, and will be air conditioned.
