CRACK THAT WHIP! Ann Arbor's outdoor skating season began yesterday as the Park Department opened the city's rinks earlier than usual, thanks to the current pre-Christmas cold snap. And skaters were quick to take advantage of their opportunity, as this picture, made at the Burns Park rink, proves. Nine boys have organized a game of "crack the whip."

HOCKEY, AND A TUMBLE: Where there is ice and youngsters to use it, a city rink quickly becomes a lively place. In this one small corner of the Burns Park rink the photographer caught the end of a "crack the whip" line, a boy practicing with a hockey stick and another in the middle of a nosedive as the slippery surface slides right out from under him.

City Making Ice for Skaters at Parks: Those Christmas ice skates can be put to good use in many more city locations about New Year's Day. City crews yesterday were turning snow fields into water and then ice with sprinkling operations. City employee Glen Merryfield is shown moving one of the sprinklers at Burns Park. Other ice rinks are being readied at West Park, Northside, Summit, Veterans, Allmendinger and Community. If the weather holds, the parks should be ready for ice skaters about New Year's Day, according to city workmen. And with considerable snow on the ground, there's excellent sledding in many parts of the community. Two of the traditional fun spots for little boys and girls with sleds are Veterans Park and Huron Municipal Golf Course.
