NEW LAYER: Crews are applying resurfacing material and the heavy roller is packing it down. This picture was taken in the 100 block of E. Liberty St. It is one of the last phases of the improvement job after new curbing has been installed. It was a hot job during the recent Ann Arbor heat wave.

Another curb will be bent around the base of a tree when workmen widening S. Fourth Ave. reach the elm (left) in front of the YWCA. Sidestepping construction something like the example at right (on Eighth St. between W. Liberty and W. Washington Sts.) will be necessary -- thanks to the City Council's spare-that-tree action last night. The Public Works Department had ruled that the tree in front of the YWCA must go to preserve a straight cub line. But the Council, which has intervened previously in behalf of ill-placed trees, ruled that the elm shall live and the curb shall bend.
