Although freshman orientation activities take up a major share of his time, Robert Essig, 18-year-old University freshman from Dowagiac, finds time between appointments to become accustomed to his room in Tyler House of East Quadrangle. He is tuning in the radio which he partly constructed himself. Robert likes the room, finds the atmosphere pleasing and its bed "very comfortable."

THIS ROOM WILL BE HIS HOME: Robert puts his things away in his room at Tyler House of East Quadrangle, the newest unit in the University's residence housing for students. Eighteen-year-old Robert comes from a family of Michigan men. His father, Dr. H. Harold Essig, of Dowagiac, was graduated from the University School of Dentistry in 1918. His grandfather, Dr. Frank H. Essig, also a dentist, was graduated from here in 1888. Robert is departing, however, from the family vocation, he plans to become an electrical engineer. His room also is a departure from the University time of his father and grandfather for there were no residence halls then like East and West Quadrangle.

ROBERT'S READING ABILITY IS TESTED: Last night, Robert reported at Hill auditorium for a reading test, aimed at examining his ability to grasp subject matter of material which he studies. Robert will need lots of ability at this for he will start studies next week in preparation for electrical engineering, which like all engineering requires plenty of studying. Robert so far has been especially interested in radio. He stayed out of school for a year, after graduation in 1939 from Dowagiac High school, to work as a radio service man in Dowagiac store.
