These five Ypsilanti area youths who picketed the Washtenaw Country Club yesterday pause to talk over their situation at the entrance to the club on Packard Rd. Left to right are Bill Patchak, Dalton Webster, Robert Glencer, Jerry Glencer and Tim Von Dette. The boys said they were fired as caddies because they protested what they termed were their poor working conditions.

Motorists entering Ann Arbor on N. Main St. have observed the Economy Baler Co. sign at 1254 N. Main about 40 years. The sign was being removed this week in connection with a 24,000-square-foot addition for manufacturing that Economy Baler is building and extensive modernization of other sections of the plant. Part of the addition will front for 368 feet on N. Main and replace an obsolete structure. Economy Baler employs 75 persons.

A career soldier, Smith noted that his two-year-old daughter, Kathy, has been in 37 states since he entered the Army in 1963. Smith, his wife Janet and their daughter will leave for Hawaii at the end of the month.

Just Like Spring: Joseph Banotai and his son Joseph jr., of 6981 Rawsonville, Van Buren Township, examine some of the pansies which are blooming in a field near his greenhouse. Banotai said the fall blossoms are not unusual, and that pansies sometimes bloom well into winter, then begin again early in the spring. At any rate, drivers along Rawsonville are treated to a colorful sight which relieves the drabness of late autumn.

Fascinated Lily: This lily grown by Mrs. Robert DeVoe of 1433 Collegewood Dr., in Ypsilanti, has an estimated 150 blossoms. Prof. Warren H. Wagner jr., of the University of Michigan botany department, says the plant is a product of genetic fascination in which a bundle of stems become fused together into one, resulting in a larger number than usual of leaves and blossoms.

STARS OF THE SHOW: These unusual visitors to downtown Ypsilanti are only part of the many attractions of the "Sidewalk Days" promotion of the Chamber of Commerce, running through Saturday. Carnival rides are located in the downtown area, and the two elephants are part of a free circus which will be giving performances at 2:30 p.m., 7:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. beginning today, with a special performance at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. Stores in the area will be open until 9 p.m. tomorrow and Friday, and until 6 p.m. Saturday. The sales promotion is an annual event in Ypsilanti.
