Your dog is definitely a contender if he/she is spayed or neutered, friendly to fellow animals and humans, and has that certain flair for the spotlight. Yes, legendary musician, songwriter and activist Gilberto Gil is in Ann Arbor this week! There is still time to get tickets to his performance at the Hill Auditorium this Friday, March 16th at 8pm. I'll be "esperando na janela." If you want a preview or can't make it to the concert, the library currently has Quanta Live for check out.

If you have an invention you are trying to market you might consider connecting with the New Enterprise Forum to network with other inventors, investors and entrepreneurs. The Forum will be hosting an event on Thursday, March 15 at 5:45 at the Holiday Inn North Campus (3600 Plymouth Rd.)The featured speakers, Hugo Braun, of North Coast Technology Investors, and Rajesh Kothari of Seneca Partners, will discuss "Perspectives on the Investor/Entrepreneur Relationship." The program is free to members and $20.00 for non-members. The organization's mission is "to link entrepreneurs with management expertise, joint venture partners, business services, capital and other critical resources."

For those of you who missed last week's lunar eclipse like we did because of cloudy skies, there can still be stars and planets in your future. On March 9 & 23 at the Angell Hall Observatory there are two Open Houses sponsored by the U-M Astronomy Department. All are invited to peer through the telescopes in the observatory on the Angell Hall roof and to view shows in the planetarium. Also, Student Astronomy Society members give short presentations on a variety of astronomy topics. Fifth floor rooftop observatory, Angell Hall (from the large State St. entrance, take one of the elevators on the left to the fifth floor). Free. 764-3440. 9-11 p.m.

Think Spring in Botanical Language

Two mid-career Michigan artists will dazzle you with luminous images of botanicals at the River Gallery in Chelsea, Michigan, March 3 - March 31st.
Mary Beth Koeze is an award-winning painter who received her degree from the University of Wisconsin.
Kim Kauffman, a technically astute photographer, will present unique photo collages created from multiple scans of original botanical images.( Artist statement).
An artist talk is planned for March 17th at 4 p.m. at the gallery. FREE.

On our way home yesterday we saw a forlorn Collie walking down the road. A dangerous proposition for man or beast. He finally turned up a driveway, hopefully on his way home. This weekend Collies, in all their glory, are on display at the Washtenaw Farm Council Grounds. Around 160 collies from all over the country compete, in rally and obedience trials, in one of the largest collie shows in the country. Food concessions. Morning & afternoon time TBA (Mar. 2 & 3) & 8 a.m.-afternoon (Mar. 4), 5055 Ann Arbor-Saline Rd. Free admission. (419) 836-2612.

Embracing Eatonville at UMMA Off/Site

There is still time to visit the photography exhibition Embracing Eatonville at the University of Michigan Musuem of Art Off/Site (through March 18th).
Located in Orange County, Florida, Eatonville was the first incorporated African-American community in the nation. Today, it is perhaps best known for its annual showcase of arts, literature and culture that celebrates native daughter Zora Neale Hurston.
The current exhibition "celebrates the spirit and character of Eatonville through the work of contemporary photographers Dawoud Bey, Lonnie Graham, Carrie Mae Weems, and Deborah Willis, each of whom have created a new body of work for this exhibition as they explore the importance of place to individual and collective identity".
