State St. area and traffic was blocked from the street for more than three hours today as firemen battled a fire that destroyed a large stock of Christmas merchandise at Wild's clothing store. Hundreds of students and townspeople thronged sidewalks to watch firemen fight the three-hour blaze which raced through the Wild Building, 311-313 State St., yesterday. Police roped off an area in front of the building and the crowd, jammed behind the barrier, made movement on the west sidewalk almost impossible. The street was closed to cars during the fire.

Fire Ravages Store Interior: Havoc done to the interior of the Wild & Co. clothiers' store by yesterday's extensive fire in the Wild Building at 311-313 S. State St. is shown in the above photograph. Showcases and other fixtures collapsed into this jumbled wreckage as the fire-weakened floor gave way. Some salvage operations were being attempted today by store employees, as is indicated above, but very little hope was held that any appreciable amount of usable goods would be recovered.
