Proper respect for the American flag is the subject for the first and last lessons of the day in all of Washtenaw county's country schools. Typical of this solemn and symbolic rite was the raising at the Cherry Hill school, near the Wayne-Washtenaw county line by the group shown above. While the teacher, Mrs. Jane W. West, watches approvingly, Harry West (left) and Elizabeth Gustine raise the school's flag before the morning session starts.

A Michigan flag, which has flown over the state Capitol Building in Lansing, and an American flag from the Ann Arbor Chamber of Commerce were presented yesterday in City Hall to Carlton Bell (center), commander of the French Dukes Drill team: James Crawford (left center), exalted ruler of Elks Pratt Lodge, sponsor of the drill team, and Sgt. Kenneth Klinge (far left) of the Ann Arbor Police Department. Making the presentation are Sen. Gilbert E. Bursley (right center) and William Botts (far right) of the Ann Arbor Chamber of Commerce.
