Similar tribute was paid throughout the city as flags were lowered before public buildings, business establishments and residences.

WAR HEROES HONORED: In a salute to the heroes of American wars, the University Marching Band formed this shield and unfurled an American flag Saturday at the half of the Michigan-Illinois game. Forming the "U" inside the shield are members of the Army ROTC on campus. Members of the Navy ROTC formed the "S" and members of the Air Force ROTC the "A." More than 75,000 fans saw the game, which Michigan won 17-7.
