Warm Welcome for Hawaiians: It was a warm welcome that the family of Phyllis Yabui, a graduating senior at Eastern Michigan University, received yesterday when they flew into Detroit from Maui, Hawaii, to be on hand for Saturday's commencement ceremonies. President Harold E. Sponberg was at the airport along with Phyllis, and about 15 girls from Goddard Hall. The girls presented Phyllis' father and grandfather with leis they had made from Michigan flowers. In exchange, Phyllis presented her roommate Ruth Schleicher (right) and Suzanne Campbell, advisor of Goddard, with a fresh pineapple straight from Hawaii. From left are Eitaro Kishi, Phyllis' grandfather; Shizue Yabui, her mother; Debbie, her sister; Shayne, her brother; and Toshio Yabui, her father. Last Christmas, the Goddard girls collected enough money to send Phyllis to Hawaii for the holidays.

AADL Talks to Doug Harvey

In this episode, former Washtenaw County Sheriff Doug Harvey shares his memories of the turbulent 1960s in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti. He recalls some of the personal, political, and law enforcement challenges he encountered during his years as sheriff - from the 1966 UFO sightings and the South University Riots, to the Coed murders and the John Norman Collins case. He also responds to some of the controversy surrounding his reputation and he speaks candidly about the community leaders and colleagues he admired during these years - and those he did not.
