Front page of the April 21, 1865 issue of the Weekly Michigan Argus with article about Gen. Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox, October 1966 Photographer: Eck Stanger
Year:
1966
Published In:
Ann Arbor News, October 14, 1966
Caption:
On A Long-Ago Friday: On another Friday more than a century ago -- April 21, 1865 -- Ann Arbor's Weekly Michigan Argus, a forerunner of The News, displayed little emotion, typographically, with its account of Gen. Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox. Note the headlines are hardly larger than the body type and the news itself is 12 days old and copied from a publication which had app[eared six days before. Communications were less advanced in the days of this Front Page From The Past but our grandfather has told us the news details were as welcome then as we hope they are today. The reproduction is carried as part of our observance of National Newspaper Week which runs through tomorrow.
