More than 2,500 milk bottles which do not belong to the Ann Arbor creameries that collected them are handled each day by the Ann Arbor Milk Bottle exchange. The exchange, at its headquarters at the home of Manager Louis Altenbernt on Joy Rd., in Webster township, separates the bottles and returns them to their respective owners - for a consideration, of course. Bottles from every state in the union reach the Ann Arbor exchange. Mr. Altenbernt, on the truck, is shown with two of his helpers unloading bottles to be separated.

A Day at the Dairy: Ann Arbor's Washtenaw Dairy

"A Day At The Dairy brings viewers though the spectrum of a full day at Washtenaw Dairy in the summer of 2024 — opening with coffee and donuts before sunrise until the final ice cream is served after sunset. Since its founding in 1934 as an outlet for dairy farmers to sell their milk, through expanding with ice cream and a donut enterprise reaching all over town, "The Dairy" has provided commodities and served as a community hub in Ann Arbor for 90 years. Owner and President Mary Jean Raab recounts its history alongside a cross section of a day's customers who share what's kept them coming back for a tasty treat, time and time again." - Filmmakers Donald Harrison & Isabel Ratner

In the actual milking operation, when it is done by hand, the milker makes sure that no foreign matter gets into the pail. Any germs will be killed during the pasteurization process, but the good dairyman takes extra precautions.

A further precaution to insure sanitation in milking is taken by the milker when he washes the cow's udder. This is to prevent any straw or other matter from dropping into the pail. All utensils used are sterilized frequently.
