Walls come tumbling down today at the 69-year-old former edifice of the Zion Lutheran Church at E. Washington St and S. Fifth Ave., which is being razed to make way for a building for the new Huron Valley National Bank. As shown in the left photograph, exterior demolition work began at the rear of the building, with the bricks of the chimney among the first to crumble. Resistance of the roof timbers (center photograph) to the relentless force of the crane shovel was a tribute to the skill of the carpenters who built the church in 1894. With a main rafter broken (right photograph) the roof collapses into what once was the main sanctuary of the church. Some of the stained glass windows were removed intact and sold by the wreaking firm, but others were smashed in the demolition. Razing of the two towers, including the steeple, and the front of the church was put off until last. The steeple was due to come down late this afternoon.
