Clayton Griffin of Britton was digging a pond on Scio Church Rd. this week when he hit what he was sure was a piece of wood - until he noticed it had teeth! That 'piece of wood' turned out to be the jawbone of a prehistoric mastodon, a huge elephant-like mammal which roamed the state thousands of years ago. More digging revealed other bones and scientists from the University were called to the site at 11131 Scio Church Rd., which is owned by Arthur Kuhl. The bones have been taken to the University's Museum of Paleontology where they are being examined before more excavating is done. Above, Kuhl stands beside the animal's thigh bone, which weighs some 30 pounds and is three feet long. Other bones near him are a lower jaw, rib and vertebra. At the left is the jaw bone, showing the teeth. (Photos by Jim Kane; story, more photos - Page 15)
