FARMERS GATHER SCRAP FOR WAR: Farmers throughout Washtenaw county are building up piles of scrap metals on their farms this week in a drive by the County Defense Council's salvage committee to put more old metal back into war industry. Typical of the rural salvage efforts is this growing scrap pile, about to be increased by an old cream can. The drive seeks to have all farm scrap collected by Saturday. Salvage metals not sold by farmers individually soon afterwards will be collected.

SETTING THE PACE FOR HIS ELDERS: Six-year-old David Gurk, son of Mrs. Cristobel Gurk and the late Gilbert Gurk of 117 E. Summit St. knew weeks ago Ann Arbor would have another scrap collection, so he began scouring his neighborhood for scrap metal of all sizes and shapes and weights. He is ready for tomorrow's drive with about a half a ton of scrap, including the old wheel he is holding which is half as big as he is. David has three brothers in the Army, Howard, 24, Leonard, 22, and Gilbert, 19.
