Author Gregory Orfalea Discusses His New Book: Angeleno Days - An Arab American Writer on Family, Place & Politics

There are more than 400,000 Arab Americans in Los Angeles--the largest contingent in America outside of Detroit. In his new book, 'Angeleno Days: An Arab American Writer On Family, Place And Politics,' Gregory Orfalea explores his own community and its political and social concerns. He agonizes over another destruction of Lebanon and examines in searing detail a massacre of civilians in Iraq. Books will be on sale at the event, which will also include a booksigning.Gregory Orfalea directed the Writing Program at Pitzer College of the Claremont Colleges, and currently teaches Arab American Literature at Georgetown University.

'Family Guy' Writer/Producer Cherry Cheva Discusses Her Career and Her Book, 'She's So Money'

Cherry Cheva, who is originally from Ann Arbor and a Huron High grad, currently serves as a writer/producer on Fox's hit TV show 'Family Guy' and is an author of novels for teens. Her 2009 book, 'She's So Money' is a lighthearted look at the senior year of high school. She will discuss the book as well as her experiences with 'Family Guy' and the TV industry.

Nobel Prize-Winner Dr. Henry Pollack Discusses His New Book 'A World Without Ice"

Dr. Henry Pollack will discuss his new book, 'A World Without Ice,' the first book to fully explore the connection between humans and climate change. Much has been written about global warming, but the crucial relationship between what effect people have had on the Earth's ice and its ramifications has received little focus until now. Dr. Pollack has been a professor of geophysics at the University of Michigan for more than forty years, and shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with fellow members of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and former vice president Al Gore. The event will include a book signing and books will be on sale.

'Mrs. Charles Darwin's Recipe Book Revived and Illustrated,' Discussed By Author Weslie Janeway

While husband Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species changed the way we viewed evolution, there was another book, written by a different Darwin, that shed light on Victorian style, taste, and family life. Unknown to the general public until now, Mrs. Charles Darwin compiled a cookery notebook filled with culinary instruction and personal anecdotes about everyday life in the Darwin household. The book features facsimile representations of the original recipes, each one tested by authors Weslie Janeway and Dusha Bateson. The event is cosponsored by the Culinary Historians Of Ann Arbor. Books will be on sale and a booksigning will follow the event. The Culinary Historians will prepare several tasty samples for the audience, based on Mrs. Darwin's recipes.

The Development Of Multicultural Children's Literature With EMU Professor Sheila Most

Multicultural literature for children has blossomed in the twenty-first century, yet books about many large groups of ethnic Americans still remain underrepresented. This lecture by Dr. Sheila Most of Eastern Michigan University will discuss the beginnings of multicultural books for children, influences on their development, awards for multicultural children's books, the role of publishers, important issues in multicultural children's books, and continuing needs for the future. This event is held in conjunction with the exhibit 'The Future Of Our Past: The Evolution Of Multicultural Children's Literature,' on display in the Downtown Library lower lever glass cases through November 29.

Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti Reads 2010 Author Event: Author Jerry Dennis Discusses 'The Living Great Lakes: Searching For The Heart Of The Inland Seas'

Acclaimed author Jerry Dennis will discuss his book in the Towsley Auditorium of the Morris Lawrence Building at Washtenaw Community College (located at 4800 Huron River Drive in Ann Arbor Township) and offer his own thoughts on the Great Lakes and his personal 4-week journey through the Lakes as a crew-member on a tall-masted schooner. Dennis' book, 'The Living Great Lakes: Searching For The Heart Of The Inland Seas,' has been chosen as the focus of the 2010 Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti Reads program. This appearance is a key event for the Reads program, which this year focuses on the subject of Michigan. A booksigning will follow and books will be on sale at this event, courtesy of Nicola's Books.
