Webcomic Author Chris Onstad Discusses His Famous Comic "Achewood" and His New Book "The Great Outdoor Fight"

Here's your chance to meet "Achewood" creator Chris Onstad! Hear about his new book "The Great Outdoor Fight" when Vault of Midnight co-owner Curtis Sullivan moderates an author/audience question and answer session. Copies of Onstad's new book will be for sale at the event, courtesy of the Vault. A book signing/reception will be held at Vault of Midnight, 219 South Main Street in Ann Arbor, immediately following this event. Since 2001, the intelligent, hilarious, and adult (but not filthy) cult comic "Achewood" has built a six-figure international following. The comic was chosen by Time Magazine as the best graphic novel of 2007.

Author Nancy Goldstein Discusses Her New Book :"Jackie Ormes: The First African American Woman Cartoonist"

In honor of Women's History Month, Ann Arbor author Nancy Goldstein will discuss the life of Jackie Ormes and show examples of her illustrations. In an era (1937-56) when there were few opportunities for women, and even fewer for African American women, Ormes blazed a trail as a popular artist with the major black newspapers of the day. Her cartoons and comic strips provide a glimpse into her view of U.S. culture and history during that era, including racial segregation, cold war politics, the atom bomb, and environmental pollution.Goldstein's book will be for sale at the event, courtesy of Shaman Drum Bookshop. The event is cosponsored by The University of Michigan Press, The University of Michigan Art Museum, and Shaman Drum Bookshop.

Graphic Novelist Josh Elder, Author of 'Mail Order Ninja' Discusses His Craft

This Chicago-based graphic novelist recently made a splash in the publishing world with his "Mail Order Ninja" graphic novel series and nationally-syndicated comic strip from TokyoPop. He has also written an upcoming issue of "The Batman Strikes" for DC Comics. Find out how Josh got his start and what it's like in the world of graphic novel authors when Josh visits the Library to discuss his craft. The event will include a book signing, with books available for purchase. This event will be taped for future broadcast on Community Television Network, Channel 18.A life-long comic book fan and graduate of Northwestern University with a degree in Film, Josh spent several years after graduation on the periphery of the comic book industry, first as a DC Comics intern and later as an associate editor for Wizard Magazine. In April 2005, his short story, "Mail Order Ninja," won the grand prize in TokyoPop's fifth Rising Stars of Manga contest. He scored a six-book deal as a result. Josh is now working on the third volume of "Mail Order Ninja." He also writes graphic novel reviews for the Chicago Sun-Times.
