The Benefits Of Breastfeeding With Lisa Hammer, M.D.

Breastfeeding has many benefits for infants, mothers and families. Did you know that:Breastfed newborns tend to have fewer ear infections and respiratory infections? Breastfeeding causes the mother's uterus to contract and reduces uterine bleeding after delivery? Breastfeeding helps moms lose weight following delivery?A family can save a sizable amount of money breastfeeding as opposed to buying formula?Did you also know that women frequently encounter problems in the first few days to weeks and without adequate support, they make a decision to quit breastfeeding and transition to formula feeding?Join Lisa Hammer, MD, IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant), Clinical Assistant Professor in the UM Department of Pediatrics, as she discusses the benefits of breastfeeding. This event is geared for new parents, expectant parents, grandparents, anyone involved in the care of a breastfeeding newborn and anyone who would like more information about breastfeeding and its benefits! Husbands and partners are also encouraged to attend. Topics will also include breastfeeding problems, milk production, pumping, latch technique, returning to work while breastfeeding and local breastfeeding support. Dr. Hammer is both a board certified pediatrician as well as an international board certified lactation consultant. She currently serves as medical director of the University of Michigan Briarwood Center for Women, Children, and Young Adults which provides pediatric and Ob/GYN services and is also the Director of the University of Michigan Outpatient Breastfeeding Program. She is a member of the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine and has over 15 years of experience working with breastfeeding mothers and babies.

World Breastfeeding Week Event: Creating A Supportive Breastfeeding Culture...In Our Homes, In Our Workplaces...In Our Communities

Joanne Motino Bailey, Director of the University of Michigan Nurse-Midwifery Service, leads a distinguished panel in a discussion of breastfeeding in conjunction with World Breastfeeding Week (August 1 - 7). World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated every year in more than 120 countries to encourage breastfeeding and improve the health of babies around the world. The panel, which includes local health professionals Linda Faubert, RN, LC; Lauren Helms, MD; and Katherine Pasque MD, will discuss many key issues, including basic support of breastfeeding from partners, family and friends; return to work strategies (including conversations with colleagues and supervisors); and societal influences. The event is co-sponsored by the Center for Breastfeeding Excellence, Mott Children's Hospital.

This lecture will also help parents understand why problem behaviors occur as well as provide general strategies for how to address these behaviors.Aubry Dodge earned her Master's Degree in Clinical Behavioral Psychology from Eastern Michigan University, and went on to complete her Board Certification in Behavioral Analysis in 2010. She has been providing Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and Verbal Behavior Analysis services for children with autism since 2001, and she has experience supervising home therapy programs for clients as well. Established in 1988, Building Bridges Therapy Center is a "full-service" pediatric clinic, staffed by a team of caring, experienced professionals in wide variety of disciplines: Speech and Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Sensory Integration, Physical Therapy, Neuropsychological Testing, Psychological Counseling, Music Therapy, Educational Specialists.
