Teen Summer Reading Game: Flexible and Fun

There has been a bit of confusion about the Teen Summer Reading Game.
The Teen Summer Reading Game offers a variety of activities that 6-12 graders can do in order to finish the game and be entered into the grand prize drawings. This list of activities is meant as a suggestion, to give teens ideas for completing the Summer Reading Game. Our hope is to make the game fun and flexible.
Teens, we want you to be able to enjoy the game whether reading "great novels", or rocking out to Guitar Hero (or both) is your idea of a good time.
So, can you play the game by reading 10 books? Sure you can.
Can you play the game by coming to 10 library programs? Sure you can.
Can you come up with the best combination for you? Of course.

All ages can sign-up and get a card.
If you were in 2nd or 3rd grade this year you might enjoy trying the following series.
For "silly" try Mercy Watson; or Geronimo Stilton.
For "everyday kids" try Hey Li'l D; or Clementine.
For "sports" try Winning Season; or Baseball Card Adventure.

A classic author is Marguerite Henry who wrote Justin Morgan Had A Horse and Misty Of Chincoteague, and more based on true stories.
For easier reading levels, try books on ponies in the
Animal Ark series like Pony At The Point; and the
The Pony Pals series with A Pony For Keeps.
For more difficult reading, try the
Lucky Foot Stable series including Lady's Big Surprise, or the
Heartland series with After The Storm and many more.

It's Summer Reading Time

Are you ready for summer reading? We are! Register online or in person at any of our locations beginning Friday, June 13.
This year's theme is "Under Construction" and we have fun planned for all ages. Everyone is invited to come hear the exciting West African Sounds of Like Water Drum and Dance at the new Traverwood Branch, July 6, 2:00-3:00 p.m. Adults who really want to stick to the theme can learn about Creating A Green Home in a presentation; by Michael Klement of Architectural Resource, LLC; on green building strategies, July 30, 7:00-8:30 at the Malletts Creek Branch. Children are invited on July 19, 2:00-3:00, to the Pittsfield Branch, to make their own monster trucks by re-using common household items. Or participate in our summer contests! Teens, come get your game on high tech and no tech throughout the summer.
Whether you want to learn; play; hang out; or find new books, magazines, movies and music; you can do it at AADL this summer.

If you are in Kindergarten-to-3rd Grades, you can KEEP your math skills "Under Construction" and visit IXL Math online. "Created by ed-tech outfit Quia, IXL involves a membership plan, but site visitors can answer 20 questions a day, free of charge". Math activities inspired by books can help too. Try Adding Puppies And Kittens; Measuring Puppies And Kittens; and Telling Time With Puppies And Kittens.

Summer Reading is UNDER CONSTRUCTION so keep your "thinking machine" oiled. You'll need good equipment.
Librarians are visiting schools the month of May promoting Summer Reading.
We can NAIL DOWN some good books for 1st graders, like
Amelia Bedelia Under Construction;
You Read To Me And I'll Read To You: Short Scary Stories; or
Thelonius Monster's Sky-High Fly Pie.
