LINED UP FOR WORK: Long rows of dental chairs line the main clinic of the U-M Dental School, where dental hygienists work for an allotted number of hours each week to receive the necessary practical experience for their course. While dental students perform dental work on the public here, dental hygienists perform prophylactic treatment, or cleaning and polishing of the teeth, and instruct patients in correct oral care. The clinic is equipped with 133 dental chairs, 94 of which are allotted especially to dental students and 39 of which are used by the dental hygienists.

PERSONAL DEMONSTRATION: Part of the dental hygienist's function as an assistant to the busy dentist is to demonstrate for the patient exactly how the teeth should be brushed, as David Cousino learns here from Linda Lajiness. Patients are asked to bring their own toothbrushes with them when they come to the clinic, and the hygienists can thus tell from the brush's condition whether or not it has been used correctly.
