Firemen work their way onto the second floor of the building at 2010 Washtenaw Ave. to keep flames from spreading to the north wing of the 15-year-old brick home. All six occupants of the home managed to escape unharmed. Capt. Arthur Stauch carried one elderly woman to safety from her first floor bedroom. A caretaker and his wife were forced to leave their basement apartment through a window. The dwelling is owned by John E. Stowe of 312 Juniper Lane, Barton Hills. He estimated the loss at more than $60,000. (Other pictures on page 22.)
