Shriver Speaks Here - R. Sargent Shriver, head of the Peace Corps and brother-in-law of the late President John F. Kennedy, speaks from the spot on the Michigan Union steps where Kennedy first proposed such a corps in a 2 a.m. campaign talk four years ago. The plaque on the wall to Shriver's right was installed to commemorate the memorable Oct. 14, 1960, event. In his talk, the Peace Corps head gave U-M students credit for convincing Kennedy he should go ahead with establishment of the corps.
