Light Work: Workmen raise flood lights into position on a softball diamond at Veterans Memorial Park. Lights also are being placed on a baseball field at the park. Both lighting systems are expected to be ready for use this summer and will provide the means for greater use of the park by enabling teams to play after sundown. The lights are part of the continuing development of the park being carried by the city's Department of Parks and Recreation.

Final construction touches are being applied to the Veterans Park ice rink for its expected opening in late October. Dick Shaneyfelt, a plumber working on the $600,000 facility, is shown walking across the floor, which will eventually be ice. the rink is scheduled to be open about six months of the year. The enclosed rink will also be the home of the Huron High School hockey team, and the Pioneer High team may use it later in the season. City officials are hoping to begin a noon-time skating program similar to the noon-time swimming program at the city's pools during the summer. Because weather-related cancellations will no longer be a factor, more skating time should be available this season.
