AACHM Oral History: David Rutledge

David Rutledge

David Rutledge was born in 1945 in LaFayette, Alabama and grew up in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He traces his commitment to public service to his experience protesting a segregated lunch counter as a teenager. He attended Tennessee State University and the University of Michigan Law School. Mr. Rutledge has served as Superior Township Supervisor, Ypsilanti State Representative, and as a member of the Washtenaw County Parks Commission and Washtenaw Community College Board of Trustees. He dedicates this interview to his parents and his late wife, Gerri.

The barber, working without overhead lighting, is Ike Kozminski, owner of the Ideal Barber Shop at 209 E. Washington St.

LONG PATRONAGE ENDS: John R. Meadows, senior vice-president of the Ann Arbor Bank, for 38 years a patron of the barbershop at 115 W. Huron St., got his last haircut there yesterday from barber Duane Welch. The shop closes July 1 to make way for the Ann Arbor Trust Company's expansion program. The late Frank Miller owned the shop between 1922 and 1953, when it was sold to Ray Knieper. Welch has operated it since 1958.

The barber shop and restaurant pictured above are on land offered to the county for a District Court. The buildings are located just off Clark Rd. and east of Washtenaw Square
