BEEF EATERS: The Darrow boys - Peter, jr., (left) and Duncan - inspect the family freezer to see what remains of the half a cow the family purchased last August. The Peter Darrows, who live at 1043 Martin Pl., find that purchasing a half a cow annually from a local meat market is economical for a growing family. Charlotte Darrow, whose specialties are a beef stew, burgundy style, and a pot roast with brandy and red wine, has the butcher cut and wrap the beef in the desired cuts for cooking her family's favorite recipes.

POPPY PURCHASE: Like thousands of Ann Arbor residents today, little Richard Veal, 5, buys a veterans poppy in the downtown business district. Richard, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Veal of Whitmore Lake, makes his purchase from Peter P. Darrow of the Graf-O'Hara post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Also selling the memorial flowers were the Erwin Prieskorn post of the Legion and the VFW's Kenneth Fox post.
