(with hand raised) was the winner of a pie eating contest yesterday at Burns Park, an activity sponsored by the Ann Arbor public schools' Recreation Department which supervises summer play activities at 11 playgrounds in the city. In this contest, at least, nobody lost.

CRACK THAT WHIP! Ann Arbor's outdoor skating season began yesterday as the Park Department opened the city's rinks earlier than usual, thanks to the current pre-Christmas cold snap. And skaters were quick to take advantage of their opportunity, as this picture, made at the Burns Park rink, proves. Nine boys have organized a game of "crack the whip."

In this one small corner of the Burns Park rink the photographer caught the end of a "crack the whip" line, a boy practicing with a hockey stick and another in the middle of a nosedive as the slippery surface slides right out from under him.
