Fire At Dawn: This is the front of the Embassy Hotel building at Fourth Ave. and E. Huron St. as firemen worked to quell a stubborn basement blaze at 4:45 a.m. today. Three guests, a fireman and a policeman were overcome temporarily with smoke from the fire.

Safe But Smoky: These four men were among the 12 occupants of the Embassy Hotel when it was filled with smoke from a basement fire this morning. George Lage, 35, left, manager of the hotel, chats with Frank Deta, 33, Dick Lucas, 22, and Warren Lord, 67. Lucas and Lage aroused sleeping guests on the second and third floors of the hotel.

Randolph, the new lessee, has made extensive exterior and interior changes in what is now the Embassy Hotel building. The old and new exteriors are shown here, along with one of the redecorated and newly furnished rooms.
