MeLCat is here!

The Ann Arbor District Library is pleased to announce the return of patron-initiated interlibrary loan service through the Michigan eLibrary Catalog (MeLCat), a statewide-shared catalog.

You may request interlibrary loans directly by going to MeLCat. There is also a link to MeLCat from the Request ILL page on our website.

All requests will require your name and library barcode (found on the back of your library card) and a pickup location of your choice.

When a book is ready for pickup you will receive a message similar to the one you receive now for AADL holds ready to be picked up. Books will be checked out at your pickup location for three weeks and be available for one three week renewal unless there is a request at the owning library. Renewals may be done through your online account, at any Circulation Desk, or by calling 327-4219.

AADL brings you Revolution in the Streets

Dance Dance Revolution, that is! AADL will be hosting a DDR tournament as part of this Sunday's Dancing in the Streets event in Downtown Ann Arbor. We'll be out there from 1:45-7:00 as part of the Ann Arbor Council for Traditional Music and Dance's yearly event, which this year will feature The Dodworth Saxhorn Band, Phil Ogilvie's Rhythm Kings, Saline's Fiddlers Restrung, the UM Tango Club, Swing Ann Arbor, and much more! 9/11 Exhibit Opens At AADL

What were YOU doing on the tragic date of September 11, 2001? This year marks the 5th anniversary of that eventful date in American history.

As a memorial to that day, and to the many lives that were lost, the Library announces New York, September 11th by Magnum Photographers, a stunning exhibition, on national tour, of 40 photographs from the world renowned photographic cooperative, Magnum Photos.

Previously shown only at the New York Historical Society in 2001, months after the attacks, the exhibit will be on view through Wednesday, October 11 in the Downtown Library’s Multi-Purpose Room, lower level glass case exhibit area and Third Floor Exhibit spaces. The Ann Arbor District Library is the first stop on the national tour of this powerful exhibit.

A companion book New York September 11 is also available at the Library.

Northeast Building Project Approved by AA City Council

The site plan and rezoning request for the third branch building project for the Ann Arbor District Library, a replacement for the NEB located in Plymouth Mall, were both unanimously approved at the August 10 City Council meeting. Construction documents are being finalized and the project will be bid out over the next two months. Groundbreaking is expected to occur in late September or early October and we anticipate a Spring 2008 opening.

The new branch will be located at the southwest corner of Traverwood and Huron Parkway, 1/2 mile from the current NE library branch location. The site plan includes on street parking, covered parking under the building and parking in an exposed lot south of the building.

This library branch was designed by VanTine|Guthrie Studio and will be constructed by O'Neal Construction.

The Michigan Department of Transportation and the State Library of Michigan, in conjunction with Public Libraries around the state, are giving you the opportunity to help MDOT set its priorities for transportation infrastructure development through 2030. You can take the MI Transportation Plan's short, one-page survey here, and let MDOT know what you think about road improvements, expansion, mass transit, safety, and more.

Pittsfield Branch Closed Monday and Tuesday

Our new Pittsfield Branch will be getting the final paving on its parking lot this coming Monday and Tuesday, 5/22 and 5/23. Pittsfield Branch will be closed during this process and will reopen Wednesday 5/23. Please note that the dropbox will not be accessible during this period, and items can be returned to any other AADL location.

"Books Change Lives" at any time of life

The Books Change Lives Program is part of the Ann Arbor Book Festival. BCL encourages readers to tell us about their favorite all-time book and how it changed their lives. Rachel's favorite book is Strider by Beverly Cleary. Here's what she had to say about it: "I don't know how many times I have read Strider, but I know it better than any other book. The situations that Leigh Botts faces make me love it so much. He found his comfort in writing about his anxieties and in running with his dog. The way he wrote about running made me want to run. In high school I started. Running boosted my self-esteem, kept me focused and lively, and helped me push myself. Like Leigh Botts, running helped me deal with my social awkwardness." Do you have a favorite book that influenced your life?

Date Due Notice Glitch: Check your Due Dates!

We've just discovered that, due to a bug related to the time change this Sunday, Date Due Reminder Notices did not go out yesterday (3/30) or today (3/31), and will not go out tomorrow (4/1). This means that if you have items checked out that are due Sunday, 4/2, Monday, 4/3, or Tuesday, 4/4, you will not receive an email notice reminding you of the due date.

We will take steps to avoid fining items due on those dates, but if you do receive fines next week because you missed your reminders, please be sure to contact us and we'll take care of those fines for you. In the meantime, please take a moment to check your account and see if you've got any items due 4/2-4/4. Reminder Notices will resume via email on Sunday, 4/2, for items due Wednesday, 4/5. Thanks for your patience, and please feel free to comment on this post if you have any questions.

As an aside, we do know that this bug has been fixed in the next release of our circulation system, so this shouldn't happen when we fall back in October.
