REAL PROUD OF HER OFFSPRING - Although her 10 babies were only four days old, Mrs. Black Mallard above was so proud of her family that she permitted Eck Stanger, Ann Arbor News photographer, to come within about 20 feet for a picture of herself and brood at Portage Lake, this week. After the camera clicked, the wild duck took her children on a swim around the lake. Although black mallards are often very shy, this mother seems content to spend the summer at Portage.

S.R. Wang, 2, feeds a flock of ducks at Ann Arbor's Island Park with the help of her grandmother, S.Y. Wang. The youngster was surrounded by the birds and wanted to pet them. The birds seemed to care little for companionship and more for the popcorn they were being fed.
