Foreign students are among the more familiar sights in Ann Arbor. The large numbers of Chinese, Indian, Turkish and other students give the city a real international flavor. Surjit Singh, library science student from New Delhi, here peruses an American newspaper in the lounge at the Michigan Union. Singh once worked at the National Library in New Delhi and hopes to return there.

Rudyard Kipling's "Ballad of East and West" certainly doesn't apply to Ann Arbor, where the twain forever meet in an atmosphere of cosmopolitanism and international understanding. Here, Banta Singh Pandher, 29-year-old engineering student from Badali in India's East Punjab, awaits oil-station service for his altogether American automobile. The bearded and be-turbaned Pandher is a Sigh- a member of a 450-year-old Hindu sect noted for military prowess and total disregard of caste distinctions.

Distinguished for its talent, the University Filipino Students Club, largest in the country, includes seven former instructors at the University of Philippines, numerous honor students, and four post-doctorate scholars. Pictured above are two of the group in a Filipino folk dance with Zolio C. Lindo, Jr., at the piano. The dancers are Miss Lourdes Segundo of the School of Education, and Francisco A. Castro, student in electrical engineering,. Mr. Lindo is a student in mechanical engineering. The picture was taken at the International Center where the Club holds its meetings.
