A Real Picnic - The blizzard of '78 has been no picnic. But the boys at University of Michigan's Phi Delta Theta fraternity didn't think that should prevent a "beach party". The hardy bunch, reclining above [this photo], in lawn chairs around their make-shift beach outside the Carriage House at 1224 Washtenaw Court, had one comment Thursday. "More beer." Meanwhile outside the dorms nearby, students created small blizzards of their own playing football in the two-foot drifts of snow. Technically, U-M classes weren't canceled until Friday afternoon but teacher and student absenteeism ran high both Thursday and Friday. Classes are supposed to resume Monday.

Installation of concertina wire along the perimeter fence of the Huron Valley Women's Facility in Pittsfield Township is one of various security measures being implemented to beef up security at the women's prison. Don Bergin holds the wire with a long pole as Rick Royse attaches the wire to the fence. The concertina wire was put in following a rash of recent escapes from the facility. Other security improvements are also planned.
