Joe Rodriguez, fifth from the left, first row, thumbs hooked in pockets, was one of the 18 survivors of E Company who made it to the top of the Mount Suribachi and had their picture taken by Associated Press Photographer Joe Rosenthal in 1945. Moments later Rosenthal took the famous flag-raising shot, shown in insert. The company was in the second wave of Marines to hit the Iwo Jima each and lost 130 men in the first four days of fighting.
