Weeds grow through blacktop at AA News parking lot, May 1956

The Urge to Grow: A plant may appear to be a flimsy thing, but appearances often are deceiving. These little weeds burst through the two-inch blacktop pavement of the parking lot at the Ann Arbor News to win themselves a well-earned place in the sun. University botanists identified the plants as being of the genus polygonum, which includes a wide variety of common weeds, such as smartweed and knotweed.

Drag Racing In The Huron High School Parking Lot, April 1972 Photographer: Jack Stubbs
Year:

Published In:
Ann Arbor News, April 15, 1972

Spring is here (officially, at least) and drag racing is one way to celebrate. A group of students at Huron High School organized a drag race and held it yesterday in the school parking lot. A large number of students and a few teachers participated in the "dead heat" start in which two cars or pick-up trucks at a time raced about one-eighth of a mile. All safety precautions were taken, according to Ruth Straight, a class principal. There were no mishaps. A follow-up contest for yesterday's winners is being planned in the near future.
