The Stranded House: This aerial view of the new dual-lane US-23 in Northfield township shows the quandry in which the Frank R. Ross family has been placed by the building of the new road. The Ross farm home is seen in the lower center. Seventeen of the 18 acres of land owned by Ross are located in the open stretch of land directly across the dual-lane highway. He is required to drive 2 1/2 miles around the new road to reach his 17 acres, although the land is only 250 feet from his home.

Under City Ownership: These two ponds are part of the Detroit Edison Company's Huron River properties that have come under city ownership. The recent purchase, at a cost to Ann Arbor of $280,000, was made to protect the city's main water supply and to provide for recreation and open space. Barton Pond is shown in the lower picture with the Barton Dam at the right. US-23 is at the top right.

Nearing Completion: Two white ribbons of new Ann Arbor Eastbelt paving descending from the north have nearly reached the Geddes Rd. interchange. The interchange, the bridge over the Huron River (lower portion of picture) and the section of the Eastbelt bypass north to US-23 are expected to be opened to traffic by Oct. 27, according to the Michigan State Highway Department. Just below the interchange and bridge at the lower right of this aerial photo is a portion of Hogback Rd.

Extension of the Willow Run Expressway west beyond U-23 (Carpenter Rd.) and around Ann Arbor presents new traffic problems. Construction on the Platt Rd. overpass is shown in the lower photo. West of this, is Stone School Rd. (not shown), where the overpass has been completed, and farther west on State Rd., work has begun on an overpass to be completed in October. When completed, the Expressway will reach US-12, west of Ann Arbor. State traffic counts show that traffic during an average day on US-23 near the Expressway totals 12,000 cars. There are 6,300 automobiles traveling on the Expressway near its US-23 terminus, the same survey disclosed. Completion date for the US-23 overpass is Nov. 15, 1955.

This picture shows the eastern extremity of the bypass, connecting with the Willow Run Expressway at US-23 (extending horizontally across the picture). The new highway extends northwestward toward the top of the picture with the new Platt Rd. overpass and subdivision developments southeast of Ann Arbor also shown.
